How difficulty works in Maths Blitz
Maths Blitz (solo mode) covers four topics — Addition & Subtraction, Percentages, Fractions, and Decimals — each with three difficulty tiers: Easy, Medium, and Hard. Here's what each tier actually asks, and roughly which year band it suits.
| Topic | Easy | Medium | Hard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Addition & Subtraction | Prep – 2 | Year 3 – 4 | Year 5 – 6 |
| Percentages | Year 3 – 4 | Year 5 | Year 6 |
| Fractions | Year 2 – 3 | Year 4 | Year 5 – 6 |
| Decimals | Year 3 – 4 | Year 5 | Year 6 |
Topic by topic
Addition & Subtraction
| Tier | Year Target | Number range | Operation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | Prep – 2 | 1 – 20 | Mixed +/− |
| Medium | Year 3 – 4 | 1 – 1,000 | Mixed +/− |
| Hard | Year 5 – 6 | 1 – 100,000 | Mixed +/− |
Percentages
| Tier | Year Target | Percentages used | Of numbers up to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | Year 3 – 4 | 10%, 25%, 50% | 100 |
| Medium | Year 5 | 10%, 20%, 25%, 50%, 75% | 200 |
| Hard | Year 6 | 5% – 90% (13 values) | 500 |
Fractions
| Tier | Year Target | What's asked | Denominators used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | Year 2 – 3 | Fraction of a number (e.g. “1/4 of 20”) — whole-number answer | 2, 4 |
| Medium | Year 4 | Add/subtract, matching denominators (e.g. 3/8 − 1/8) | 2,3,4,5,6,8,10 |
| Hard | Year 5 – 6 | Add/subtract, different denominators, answer simplified | 2,3,4,5,6,8,9,10,12 |
Mixed numbers (e.g. 1¾) aren't used at any tier, to keep the answer to a single fraction box.
Decimals
| Tier | Year Target | Decimals | Numbers up to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | Year 3 – 4 | 1 decimal place (tenths) | 5.0 |
| Medium | Year 5 | 2 decimal places (hundredths) | 5.00 |
| Hard | Year 6 | 2 decimal places (hundredths) | 50.00 |
Where this applies: these are the same topic and difficulty tiers in both places — solo play's setup screen, and the Topic/Difficulty pickers a teacher sets when creating a multiplayer game. When hosting multiplayer, a teacher can also pick Custom… on any topic to set their own number range, percentages, or denominators instead of a preset tier.
These tiers are a general guide based on typical Prep–6 progression, tuned for a fast tap-the-answer game rather than pulled from a specific curriculum document — a good starting point, not a fixed standard.
